Neanderthal man or Homo neanderthalensis were the early humans who emerged in Europe and southwest Asia about 200,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch. They became extinct approximately 40,000 years ago. 

Many researchers conclude that Neanderthals were driven to extinction through competition with modern humans who had already begun to spread in Europe. The two groups might have competed for food, shelter, and other things that were necessary for one's survival.
