Detailed Solution

Astronauts experience zero gravity in space because both the spacecraft and the people inside it are moving around the Earth in a constant state of free fall. The spacecraft is traveling sideways and falling toward the Earth, but the speed is so high that it keeps missing the Earth and stays in orbit. Inside the craft, astronauts fall at the same rate as their ship, so they feel weightless and look like they are floating. This feeling happens because there is no floor pushing up against them as on Earth.
