How do ciliated cuboidal cells differ in function from nonciliated?

Ciliated cuboidal cells possess tiny hair-like structures called cilia on their surface, while nonciliated ones do not. The cilia beat rhythmically to move fluids, mucus, or reproductive cells across epithelial surfaces. Ciliated cuboidal epithelium is found in areas like the bronchioles of the lungs and parts of the reproductive tract, such as the fallopian tubes. In the respiratory system, they help remove dust and microbes trapped in mucus. 

In the reproductive system, they assist in moving eggs toward the uterus. Nonciliated cuboidal cells, on the other hand, specialize mainly in secretion and absorption rather than movement. They are present in kidney tubules, thyroid follicles, and gland ducts. Without cilia, these cells rely on their surface area and active transport mechanisms for efficient exchange of materials. The presence or absence of cilia determines the cell’s function: ciliated for movement and transport, nonciliated for secretion and absorption. Both types maintain body homeostasis but serve in different systems based on their specialized adaptations.
