How do fish breathe in water?

Fish breathe through gills. Gills are specialized organs that extract dissolved oxygen from water, which is then transported to the fish's body. As water flows over the gills, oxygen diffuses across the thin walls of the gills and then into the fish's bloodstream. Carbon dioxide, a byproduct of respiration, diffuses out of the fish's bloodstream and into the water.
