The Rule: A high-amplitude wave carries more energy and is perceived as a loud sound. A low-amplitude wave carries less energy and is perceived as a soft sound.

Important Distinction

While we treat these as simple one-to-one relationships (Frequency = Pitch, Amplitude = Loudness), human hearing is more complex. For example, our ears are more sensitive to certain frequencies, so two sounds with the same amplitude but different frequencies might be perceived as having slightly different loudnesses.
