Detailed Solution

Microorganisms play a vital role in modern farming because they naturally improve soil fertility, protect crops, and reduce the dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. One of the most important ways they help farmers is through nitrogen fixation. Bacteria such as Rhizobium live in the root nodules of leguminous plants like peas, beans, and lentils. These bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen, which plants cannot use directly, into forms such as ammonia and nitrates that plants can absorb. This process enriches the soil and reduces the farmer’s need for costly nitrogen fertilizers.

Apart from this, many farmers use biofertilizers that contain beneficial microbes like Azotobacter, Azospirillum, and blue-green algae. These microorganisms add essential nutrients to the soil, improve crop yield, and maintain soil health without polluting the environment. Similarly, some microorganisms act as natural pesticides. A well-known example is Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a bacterium that produces toxins harmful to certain crop pests but harmless to humans and useful insects. Fungi such as Trichoderma also protect plants by suppressing disease-causing fungi in the soil.

Microorganisms further help farmers by decomposing organic matter like animal manure and crop residues. This process produces humus, which improves the soil’s structure, water-holding capacity, and nutrient content. Through all these roles, microorganisms make farming more sustainable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly while ensuring healthy crop production.
