Detailed Solution

Paramecium obtains its food using tiny hair-like structures called cilia that cover its body and create water currents, sweeping food particles mainly bacteria and algae—toward its oral groove, where the food is ingested via phagocytosis and enclosed in food vacuoles for digestion.

Feeding Process

  • Cilia on the paramecium's surface beat rhythmically to move water and suspended food particles toward a specialized depression called the oral groove.
  • The oral groove channels the food into a narrower passage called the buccal cavity or gullet, and then through an opening called the cytostome (cell mouth).
  • Food particles are engulfed at the cytostome into food vacuoles by phagocytosis—a process where the cell membrane wraps around the food to internalize it.
  • Inside the cell, food vacuoles circulate by cytoplasmic streaming (cyclosis), and digestive enzymes break down the food, making nutrients available to the cell.
  • As digestion continues, the vacuole's contents become acidic; digested nutrients diffuse into the cytoplasm.
  • Waste materials are then expelled from the cell through a specialized structure at the rear end called the anal pore (cytoproct).

Feeding Habits

  • Paramecium mainly feeds on bacteria, algae, yeasts, and other small organic particles found in freshwater environments.
  • Some species can also obtain nutrients from symbiotic algae living within their cells.

This highly efficient feeding strategy allows paramecium to thrive in nutrient-rich aquatic environments, making it a model organism for studying nutrition and cellular processes.
