Detailed Solution

Pollination happens when pollen from a flower’s anther lands on the pistil—the female part of the flower made up of the stigma, style, and ovary. When the right (compatible) pollen lands on the stigma, it starts to grow a tiny tube called the pollen tube. This tube moves down through the style to reach the ovary, which has the ovules (female cells). The male cells from the pollen then travel through the tube to fertilize the ovules, helping the plant reproduce.

Role of Pistil Parts in Pollination

  • Stigma: The sticky top part of the pistil where pollen grains land. It helps the flower identify and accept pollen from the same species, ensuring proper fertilization.
  • Style: A slender, tube-like part that connects the stigma to the ovary. After the pollen lands on the stigma, the pollen tube grows through the style, carrying male cells toward the ovary.
  • Ovary: The swollen bottom part of the pistil that contains the ovules (female reproductive cells). The pollen tube enters the ovary and releases the male cells to fertilize the ovules, leading to seed formation.
