Detailed Solution

The hypothalamus detects temperature changes through thermoreceptors located both within itself and in other parts of the body.

1. Central Thermoreceptors: Located in the preoptic area of the anterior hypothalamus, these receptors constantly monitor the temperature of the blood flowing through the brain. Even slight changes (as little as 0.01°C) are detected and trigger automatic responses.

2. Peripheral Thermoreceptors: Found in the skin and some internal organs, these receptors detect external temperature changes. The sensory information is sent via the spinal cord to the hypothalamus, allowing it to adjust body responses accordingly.

When blood temperature rises, the hypothalamus activates heat-loss mechanisms like sweating and dilation of skin blood vessels. When temperature drops, it triggers heat production and conservation, such as shivering and vasoconstriction.

The hypothalamus integrates both internal and external thermal signals to maintain the body’s internal temperature — a process essential for enzymatic activity, metabolism, and survival.

Thus, through its thermoreceptors and feedback mechanisms, the hypothalamus continuously ensures temperature homeostasis in the human body.
