How far does light travel in one year?

In one year, light travels nearly 9.46 trillion kilometers or about 5.88 trillion miles. This is because light moves incredibly fast, at a speed of approximately 300,000 kilometers per second. Over the course of a year, all those seconds add up to a very large distance. Astronomers use this measurement to help describe how far apart objects in space are from each other, since kilometers and miles are too small to be practical. So if you hear something is one light-year away, it means light from that object takes one full year to reach us.​
