Detailed Solution

The northern plains have been formed by the interplay of three river systems – Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. After the formation of the Himalayas these Himalayan rivers emerged that brought sediments from the mountains and deposited them at the foothills of the Himalayas. Over time this led to the formation of the rich and fertile northern plains. The Indus River system formed the Punjab plains. The Ganga river system formed the Ganga plains spread over North India in Haryana, Delhi, U.P., Bihar, partly Jharkhand and West Bengal. The Brahmaputra formed the eastern plains, particularly in Assam.
