Detailed Solution

Bleaching powder is produced industrially through the Hasenclever process by passing chlorine gas over dry slaked lime (Ca(OH)2).

Manufacturing Process

  1. Reaction:

    Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 → Ca(OCl)2 + H2O

  2. Conditions: The reaction is carried out in a chlorinator chamber under controlled humidity to ensure maximum absorption of chlorine.
  3. Drying & Packaging: The product is dried, sieved, and packed in moisture-proof containers to maintain stability.

Safe Storage Practices

  • Store in airtight containers made of glass, plastic, or corrosion-resistant materials.
  • Keep in a cool, dry, and ventilated area away from direct sunlight and organic materials.
  • Avoid contact with acids, as this releases toxic chlorine gas.
  • Follow hazard labeling and PPE standards during handling (gloves, mask, goggles).

Note: Bleaching powder decomposes over time; thus, it should be used within 3–6 months of manufacture for full strength.
