Detailed Solution

How Coal Becomes Coke and Is Used in Steel Production-

1. Creating Coke: Metallurgical coal is heated to very high temperatures (over 1000°C or 2000°F) in an oven without oxygen. This process, called coking, removes impurities and forms a hard, porous, carbon-rich material known as coke.

2. Processing Pig Iron: The coke, along with iron ore and hot air, is placed into a blast furnace.

3. Generating Heat: When coke burns, it produces extremely high temperatures (above 2000°C or 3600°F), which melt the iron ore.

4. Removing Oxygen: During burning, coke releases carbon monoxide (CO). This reacts with iron ore (Fe₂O₃) and removes its oxygen (O₂), leaving behind molten iron, also called pig iron.

5. Making Steel: The molten pig iron is taken to a steel plant, where impurities are removed and other metals are added to form steel.
