Detailed Solution

Ostwald’s Process:
1) Step I: Ammonia is oxidized by air in the presence of Pt catalyst at 800oC to give nitric oxide.
4NH3+5O2800°C,6-7 atm Pt/Rh4NO+6H2O
2) Step II: NO is oxidized to NO2 by air at a temperature below 100°C.
2NO+O2<100C2NO2
3) Step III: NO2 is dissolved in water in the presence of oxygen HNO3 is formed.
4NO2+2H2O+O2 4HNO3
Concentration: HNO3 is concentrated by
1. Distillation - then 68.5% HNO3 is formed.
2. Dehydration - then 98% HNO3 is formed with conc. H2SO4
 a) Cu+4HNO3CuNO32+2NO2+2H2O
 b) Zn+4HNO3ZnNO32+2NO2+2H2O
 c) S8+48HNO38H2SO4+48NO2+16H2O
 d) P4+20HNO34H3PO4+20NO2+4H2O
