JoSAA Counseling Explained: Your Final Step to Securing an IIT Seat After JEE Advanced
Clearing JEE Advanced is a major milestone—but admission to an IIT isn’t automatic. To get your seat, you must participate in JoSAA Counseling, the official and centralized allotment process managed by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).
JoSAA counseling brings together 23 IITs, 32 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 33 GFTIs under one platform, enabling a smooth and transparent seat allocation based on your JEE rank, category, and preferences.
Step-by-Step JoSAA Counseling Process
Step 1: Registration
Visit the official JoSAA website after JEE Advanced results are announced.
Use your JEE Main roll number and password to log in (even if you’re appearing via JEE Advanced).
Step 2: Choice Filling
Fill in your college and branch preferences from the list of available IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
You can enter as many choices as you like—there’s no limit.
Arrange preferences carefully, as the highest available choice will be locked.
Step 3: Mock Allotment
JoSAA conducts 2 rounds of mock allotments before actual rounds begin.
These mock rounds help you understand your chances based on current preferences.
You can update or reorder your choices after mock results.
Step 4: Choice Locking
Once satisfied, lock your choices before the final deadline.
Once locked, choices can’t be changed for the remaining rounds.
Step 5: Seat Allotment Rounds
JoSAA typically conducts 6 to 7 rounds of seat allotment, where:
You are allocated a seat based on:
- Your JEE Advanced AIR (for IITs) or JEE Main AIR (for others)
- Category and seat availability
- Your filled choices
Step 6: Seat Acceptance
If you are allotted a seat, you must:
- Download the provisional allotment letter
- Pay the seat acceptance fee (₹35,000 for General/EWS/OBC, ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD)
- Upload documents for verification
You will be assigned to a reporting center online for verification. Physical visits are not required initially.
Step 7: Options After Allotment
Once a seat is allotted, you have three options:
- Freeze – Accept the seat and don’t want to participate in further rounds.
- Float – Accept the seat but want to be considered for a better/higher choice.
- Slide – Accept the seat in the same institute, but want a higher-preference branch.
Final Admission
After the final round, you must report physically to your allotted IIT with original documents to complete the admission.
If you choose Float or Slide, you must track further rounds.
