Detailed Solution

750,000 km long were the railway tracks in India by 1946.
A new need had emerged since the 1850s as the railways grew. Moreover, railways played a significant role in facilitating colonial trade and the movement of imperial forces. Locomotives needed wood as fuel, and railway rails were built using sleepers. For every mile of the railroad track, 1,760 to 2,000 sleepers were required. Thus the railway network expanded fast after the 1860s. By 1890, some 25,500 km of track had been constructed. By 1946, the length of the rails had increased to more than 765,000 km. As the railway lines spread across India, more trees were being felled, which raised severe environmental issues.
