More than 22 million Africans depended on or some of the other forms of pastoral activity for their livelihood. Among them are Bedouins, Berbers, Maasai, Somalis, Borans, and Turkana. For hundreds of years, the existence of African pastoralists, like that of Indian pastoralists, has changed dramatically during the border and post-pilgrim period. Most now live in semi-arid meadows or deserts, where rainfed agriculture is difficult to practise. The Maasai herders are primarily found in east Africa, with 300,000 in southern Kenya and 150,000 in Tanzania. Their rules, restrictions, and norms have altered their way of life. There have been various challenges that they have had to deal with, the most obvious being the eternal loss of their brushing grounds.
