Detailed Solution

India has 18 biosphere reserves. These are larger protected areas than national parks, aimed at conserving biodiversity, cultural heritage, and traditional lifestyles of local communities. Out of these, 12 have been recognized under UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
Examples:

  • Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka) – India’s first biosphere reserve
  • Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (Uttarakhand)
  • Sundarbans (West Bengal) – mangrove habitat with unique flora and fauna
  • Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve (Andaman & Nicobar Islands)
