Detailed Solution

Seven million casualties were there in the First World War. The "eastern front" of the First World War was different from the "western front." Armies battled in trenches that ran the length of eastern France in the west. Troops engaged in heavy casualty were fighting in the east. Losses were startling and disheartening. Between 1914 and 1916, Russian soldiers suffered severe defeats in Germany and Austria. By 1917, there had been almost 7 million casualties. To stop the enemy from subsisting off the land, the Russian army burned dwellings and fields as they withdrew. Over 3 million refugees fled to Russia due to the damage to crops and dwellings.
