As of 2025, there are 23 IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) in India. IITs are autonomous technical universities established by the Government of India and are declared as Institutes of National Importance. The first IIT was set up in Kharagpur (1951), followed by others in Bombay (Mumbai), Delhi, Kanpur, Madras (Chennai), Guwahati, and Roorkee. In later years, more IITs were opened in states like Hyderabad, Indore, Mandi, Ropar, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Gandhinagar, and Goa. IITs are globally recognized for excellence in engineering, science, technology, and research, and they admit students mainly through the IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination).
