Metabolism, cellular organization and consciousness are defining properties of living organisms. It is because these are seen in each and every living organisms and not seen in non-living things. Reproduction is not seen in non-living organisms, but some living organisms are infertile. Growth is seen in both living and non-living organisms. Hence reproduction and growth are not considered as defining properties of living organisms.
