Detailed Solution

A mature male gametophyte is one that has 2 vegetative cells and 1 generative cell. It takes one meiosis and two mitosis to form a mature 3 celled pollen grains.

Microsporogenesis: Pollen mother cell (2n) undergoes meiosis to form microspores (n).

Microgametogenesis: Each microspore undergoes mitosis to form a 2-celled structure(one vegetative cell and one generative cell). In 60 % of angiosperms, pollen is released at the 2 celled stage. While in 40 % of angiosperms, pollen is released at 3 celled stage.
For this to happen, one more round of mitosis takes place at the 2 celled stage to form a 3 celled structure which is a mature pollen grain.
