600 members represented the Third Estate at the Estates General Assembly on 5th May 1789. Louis XVI convened an Estates General assembly to approve new tax plans on 5th May 1789. The delegates were accommodated in Versailles in a magnificent hall. The 600 members of the Third Estate were forced to stand at the back, while the First and Second Estates each sent 300 representatives, who were seated in rows with their backs to one another on both sides. The gathering was closed to peasants, artisans, and women.
