Detailed Solution

145 members were elected from Congress in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, the elections to the Central Government. The Congress party was formed in 1885 and was also one of the driving forces behind the Independence of India. Post that, it was responsible for framing India's secular, democratic and republican ideals. It dominated the political sphere of India at the centre from Independence till 1977 and then again from 1980 to 1989. From 1989, its support gradually declined. However, it continues to be one of the major political parties cutting across all social divisions in the country. It proclaims itself to be a Centrist party which is neither inclined toward the Rightist nor the Leftist ideology. The Congress also emerged to be the most significant party post the 2004 elections, with 145 of its members in the Lok Sabha.
