How many national parks are there in India?

India has 106 national parks (as of 2025), covering an area of more than 44,000 sq. km. National Parks are protected areas meant for wildlife conservation, biodiversity protection, and ecosystem balance. They are established under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Some of the famous ones include:

• Jim Corbett National Park (Uttarakhand) – the first national park in India (1936)
• Kaziranga National Park (Assam) – home to the one-horned rhinoceros
• Gir National Park (Gujarat) – only home of Asiatic lions
• Sundarbans National Park (West Bengal) – famous for mangroves and Bengal tigers
