Glucocorticoids stimulate gluconeogenesis (synthesis of glucose from non carbohydrate sources), lipolysis and proteolysis; and inhibit cellular uptake and utilisation of amino acids. 

Cortisol is also involved in maintaining the cardio-vascular system as well as the kidney functions.
