Detailed Solution

25 per cent of the land-producing indigo was under the nij system. The planter cultivated indigo under the nij farming system in areas under his own control. He either purchased the land outright or leased it from other zamindars, and he used hired labourers directly to manufacture indigo. It was challenging for the planters to increase the area under nij cultivation. Only rich lands—all of which were already heavily populated—could support indigo cultivation. It was only possible to buy a few little plots dispersed across the countryside. In order to cultivate indigo in plantations, planters needed wide expanses in tightly packed blocks.
