Detailed Solution

6 parties were recognised as National Parties in India in 2006. In India, all the political parties need to get themselves registered with the Election Commission. The Election Commission has laid down specific criteria for a political party to become a recognised party. The standards hold that a party needs to win at least 6 per cent of the votes out of the total votes in the elections held in Lok Sabha or  Assembly elections in four states. In addition to the share of votes, it is required to win a minimum of four seats. In 2006, there were six recognised national parties in India which are Indian National Congress (INC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
