Detailed Solution

During the time of partition there were 565 princely states in India.
A princely state, sometimes known as an Indian state or a native state, was a formally independent region of the British Indian Empire that was instead governed by a  subsidiary alliance with an Indian monarch and the suzerainty or paramountcy of the British crown. When India and Pakistan gained independence in 1947, there were technically 565 princely kingdoms, but the vast majority had agreements with the viceroy to handle public services and tax collection. In addition to thousands of zamindari farms and jagirs, the Indian subcontinent had 565 princely states that were recognized by the British government at the time of their withdrawal. Princely states made up 23% of pre-independence India's total land area and covered 40% of that in 1947.
