Detailed Solution

When India gained independence from the British in 1947, there were 565 princely states on the Indian subcontinent. The Princely states, or districts, were ruled by a monarch with a subordinate alliance to the British Raj. It is the area that was not directly governed by the British but instead by a local monarch who was subject to several indirect laws. During the British Raj, in addition to the princely states, there were Provinces of India, which acted as divisions of British control in India. India's two most major princely states were Jammu and Kashmir and Hyderabad, the capital of the Nizams.
