Chaudhary Devi Lal’s Party won 85 out of 90 seats in the State Assembly election of Haryana in 1987. This was a great victory for his party, the Lok Dal party. Much of it was owed to the big promises he made of waiving off loans of the farmers and small businessmen. He and his party had promised the residents of the state many times before the elections that they would win. Devi Lal became the Chief Minister of Haryana, and his party remained in power until the next elections held in 1991. He, however, did fulfil the promise of a loan waiver upon assuming the office.
