How Many Students Qualify for JEE Advanced? - Year-wise Trends and Insights
JEE Advanced is the second stage of the IIT entrance journey, and only a select pool of top-performing students from JEE Main are eligible to appear. Each year, aspirants wonder: “How many students qualify for JEE Advanced?”
Here’s a comprehensive look into the qualifying criteria, yearly statistics, and what it means for aspiring IITians.
Who Qualifies for JEE Advanced?
To be eligible to appear in JEE Advanced, students must:
- Appear in JEE Main (current year)
- Be among the top 2.5 lakh candidates (based on category-wise cutoffs and ranks)
- Satisfy additional criteria like:
- Age limit
- Number of attempts (maximum two, in consecutive years)
- Year of passing Class 12
Year-Wise Statistics: JEE Main → JEE Advanced Eligibility
Year | Candidates Appeared in JEE Main | Qualified for JEE Advanced | % Qualified |
2024 | 11.2 lakh | 2.5 lakh | 22% |
2023 | 10.9 lakh | 2.5 lakh | 23% |
2022 | 10.3 lakh | 2.5 lakh | 24% |
2021 | 9.3 lakh | 2.5 lakh | 27% |
2020 | 8.6 lakh | 2.5 lakh | 29% |
Note: The qualifying number is fixed (2.5 lakh), but the percentage varies depending on JEE Main participation.
Category-Wise Seat Distribution (Among 2.5 Lakh)
JoSAA allocates qualifying slots across different reservation categories:
Category | Approximate Quota in Top 2.5 Lakh |
General (Open) | 1,01,250 |
OBC-NCL | 67,500 |
SC | 37,500 |
ST | 18,750 |
EWS | 25,000 |
PwD | Included within each category |
Impact of Category on Qualification
Each category has its own JEE Main cutoff, which is relatively lower than the General cutoff. Hence, the percentile needed to qualify differs:
- General (CRL): 88–91 percentile
- OBC/EWS: 74–82 percentile
- SC/ST: 45–50 percentile
Students who qualify under a reserved category are considered only in that category, not in the general merit list.
What Qualifying for JEE Advanced Means
- It’s a significant milestone, but not the final goal.
- Qualifying allows you to register for JEE Advanced, but does not guarantee an IIT seat.
- From the 2.5 lakh qualifiers, typically 1.5 to 1.7 lakh actually appear for JEE Advanced.
- Only around 16,000–17,000 students eventually secure admission to IITs.
