The National Tiger Conservation Authority initiated Project Tiger in order to protect tigers from poaching activities. It governs 50 tiger reserves in India (NTCA). India is home to 70% of the world's tigers. There were 1,411 tigers in 2006, which climbed to 1,706 in 2010 and 2,226 in 2014. The government conducts a tiger census every four years. By the year 2018, according to the National Tiger Conservation Authority, there were an estimated only 2,967 tigers in existence in India.
