The term 'Adivasi' literally means 'original inhabitants.’ Adivasis are communities that have lived in close connection with forests. About 8 percent of India's population are Adivasis. Odisha in particular houses more than 60 different Adivasi groups. It should be noted that Adivasis are not a homogeneous community- there are over 500 different Adivasi groups in India. They mostly live in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and the northeastern states. There is often very little hierarchy among Adivasi groups, which makes them radically different from those communities that were organised around the principles of jati-varna or ruled by kings.
