Detailed Solution

The Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda are the four Vedas. The Rigveda, written some 3500 years ago, is the oldest Veda. The Rigveda has over a thousand hymns known as sukta, or "well-said." These songs pay homage to a variety of gods and goddesses. Three gods are particularly significant: Agni, the god of fire; Indra, the god of war; and Soma, a plant from which a unique beverage was created. These songs were composed by sages (rishis). The priests instructed students to memorise and correctly pronounce every word, syllable, and sentence. The bulk of hymns were written, taught, and learned by men. One or two of them were written by women.
