There are eight Union Territories in the country along with 28 states in the country. The Union Territories are those Territories under the Indian Government which are under direct control of the Central Government because of specified reasons such as geographical location etc. These territories are also called Centrally Administered Territories. The eight Union Territories are: (1) Andaman And Nicobar Islands- 1956, (2) National Capital Territory of Delhi- 1956, (3) Lakshadweep- 1956, (4) Dadra and Nagar Haveli (1961) and Daman And Diu (1962), (5) Puducherry- 1962, (6) Chandigarh- 1966, (7) Jammu and Kashmir- 2019, (8) Ladakh- 2019. The name of a few of these Union Territories had been changed like Lakshadweep was earlier known as Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi Islands, Puducherry was known as Pondicherry and the National Capital Territory of Delhi was known as Delhi.
