Three to four vats are needed to manufacture the dye.
Usually, the villages of the indigo cultivators were near the indigo factories owned by the planters. After the indigo harvest, it was taken to the factory, which contained vats for storage vessels. Almost three or four vats were needed to manufacture the dye, and each vat functioned separately. Firstly, the indigo leaves were soaked in warm water for hours in a vat, and when they were fermented, the liquid started to boil. Later, rotten leaves were separated, and the liquid was drained into another vat. In the second vat, the drained solution was stirred with paddles. With this, the liquid turned green and then blue. After that, lime water was added to this, separating the indigo into flakes. The mud settled on the bottom, and the liquid floated to the surface. Lastly, it was drained and transferred into another vat. After that, it was pressed and dried for sale.
