There are 543 Wildlife Sanctuaries are there in India.
Forest lands have been cleared for timber, agriculture, large industries, mines, dams, etc. In pre-colonial times, Adivasis were hunter-gatherers and nomads and lived by both shifting cultivations and also cultivating in one place. But Adivasis are now forced to migrate from their lands to live as labourers in plantations, industries, construction sites, and as domestic help through a combination of economic changes, forest policies and political force from State and private industries. The lands taken for initiating wildlife sanctuaries were initially areas where Adivasi communities lived. When they continued to stay in these forests, they were termed encroachers and evicted from their own lands. India has 543 wildlife sanctuaries that cover 1,19,776 square kilometres in total.
