Detailed Solution

There were around 2,436,000 workers in Indian factories in 1946. Indian manufacturers employed 584,000 people in 1901, but it increased to over 2,436,000 by 1946. Most industrial areas relied on local districts for labour. Peasants and artisans looking for work left the villages and migrated to the industrial hubs. In 1911, Ratnagiri, a neighbouring region, provided almost 50% of the labourers for the Bombay cotton industry. Millworkers often commuted between the city and the village, coming home only during holidays and harvests.
