After 14 years of Humayun's death, in 1569–1570, Bega Begum (Hajji Begum), the widow of Humayun, spent 1.5 million rupees on building his tomb. Mirak Mirza Ghiyas was the designer and architect of this tomb. The Humayun's tomb became the symbol of a wife's love for her dead husband, predating the Taj Mahal.
