Detailed Solution

A biodiversity hotspot is a region of the Earth that is both biologically diverse and threatened by habitat loss, climate change, or widespread species extinction. Protecting these areas from further harm is both environmentally and culturally vital, as they are home to organisms found nowhere else on the planet.

Initially, 25 biodiversity hotspots were identified but subsequently, nine more have been added to the list, bringing the total number of biodiversity hotspots in the world to 34. They host their diverse ecosystems on about 2.3 percent of the planet's surface.
