Concept: For the time being, we accept the universe's age as fact, but scientists who continue to study and analyse the universe do not. The age of the oldest item or component in the universe can be found, and the rate at which the cosmos is expanding can also be used to estimate the age of the universe.
Finding the age of the oldest star in the cosmos would provide us with an age limit for the universe, and that age would never surpass the age of that oldest star because it is evident that the universe would not be younger than the items included within itself. There are other methods than using stars to estimate the universe's age. The age of the universe is also determined through study of globular clusters.
Star-filled groups called globular clusters are dense. Stars in the oldest globular clusters have a maximum age of 14 billion years. Finally, we draw the conclusion that the universe has a maximum age of 14 billion years, or more exactly, 13.8 billion years. It might be younger but not older.
The universe is therefore thought to be 13.8 billion years old.
