Managing Common Side Effects After BCG Treatment

1. Increase Fluid Intake- Drink 2–3 liters of fluids (unless your doctor advises otherwise) for 6–8 hours after treatment. This helps flush BCG bacteria from your system.

2. Disinfect Urine- For the first 6 hours after treatment:

• Add about 1 cup of undiluted household bleach to the toilet bowl before flushing.
• Let it sit for 15 minutes before flushing to disinfect the urine.
• Be cautious to avoid splashing.

3. Prevent Splashing- Always sit while urinating to reduce splashing. Wipe the toilet seat with a disinfectant afterward.

4. Take Pain Relievers- Use over-the-counter pain medication (as directed by your doctor) to manage mild discomfort, fever, or body aches.

5. Avoid Sexual Contact- Avoid sexual contact for 24 hours after treatment. If contact is necessary, use a condom for protection.

When to Contact a Doctor

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:

• High fever above 103°F (39.4°C)
• Persistent mild fever over 101.3°F (38.5°C) lasting more than 48 hours
• Cough, joint pain, or swelling in the testicles
• Flu-like symptoms lasting longer than 72 hours
• Signs of a severe allergic reaction or liver problems (such as yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe fatigue)
