How To Draw A Labelled Diagram Of Gram Seed

To draw a gram seed accurately, it is best to draw both the external view and an internal (dissected) view to show all parts.

1. External View

1. Begin by drawing a pear-shaped or slightly ovoid structure, broader at one end and tapering to a pointed end.
2. The entire outer layer is the Seed Coat (Testa). Label this outer line.
3. At the pointed end, draw a distinct oval-shaped scar. This is the Hilum (where the seed was attached to the pod).
4. Just near one end of the hilum, draw a tiny dot or pore. This is the Micropyle (where water enters).
5. (Optional) You may also see a small ridge called the Raphe running from the hilum.

2. Internal View (Dissected)

1. Start by drawing the seed coat as in the external view, but add a line to show it has been opened or removed.
2. Inside the seed coat, draw two large, thick, bean-shaped structures that are near-mirror images of each other. These are the two Cotyledons. Label one of them.
3. In the "notch" at the pointed end, nestled between the two cotyledons, draw the small Embryo (or Embryonic Axis).
4. Label the parts of the embryo:
   • The upper, leafy part is the Plumule (which will become the shoot).
   • The lower, pointed part is the Radicle (which will become the root).
5. Show that the embryo is attached to the cotyledons.
