Complete Roadmap to Getting Admission in IIT Through JEE Advanced
Admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is a dream for millions of students in India. IITs are world-renowned for their academic excellence, rigorous curriculum, and career opportunities. However, securing a seat isn’t just about cracking a tough exam—it’s a multi-step journey, and each stage is crucial.
Here’s a complete guide to how you can get admission into IITs through the JEE Advanced route.
Step-by-Step Admission Process
1. Qualify JEE Main First
- Appear in JEE Main
- Rank within the top 2.5 lakh candidates (category-wise)
- Satisfy percentile and age criteria
The cutoffs are published every year on the NTA website after JEE Main results.
2. Register for JEE Advanced
- Eligible candidates must register online on the official JEE Advanced portal.
- Registration usually takes place within 7–10 days after JEE Main results.
- You’ll receive your admit card after successful registration and payment of the exam fee.
3. Appear for Both Papers of JEE Advanced
- JEE Advanced consists of Paper 1 and Paper 2 (both are compulsory).
- Conducted on a single day.
- Questions test analytical thinking, concept application, and problem-solving.
You’ll need an excellent command of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics to score well.
4. Check Your JEE Advanced Result
- Results are published on the official site (jeeadv.ac.in).
- You receive an All India Rank (AIR) and category rank.
- The result also shows subject-wise marks and overall score.
5. Participate in JoSAA Counseling
This is where IIT admission officially begins.
- JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) handles the centralized counseling for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
- You’ll fill in your choices of IITs and branches based on your AIR.
- There are typically 6–7 rounds of counseling.
- Seat allotment is based on:
- JEE Advanced AIR
- Category
- Seat availability
- Branch preferences
IIT Seat Matrix (Example)
Institute | Approx. Seats | Popular Branches |
---|---|---|
IIT Bombay | ~1300 | CSE, EE, Mech |
IIT Delhi | ~1200 | CSE, ECE, Chemical |
IIT Madras | ~1100 | CSE, Civil, Aero |
IIT Kanpur | ~1000 | CSE, EE, Material Science |
Exact numbers vary each year. JoSAA publishes an official seat matrix before counseling begins.
After JoSAA: Reporting and Admission
- Once allotted, you need to report online/offline, upload documents, and pay seat acceptance fees.
- After final allotment, physical reporting is done at the allotted IIT campus for admission confirmation.
Documents Required for Admission
- JEE Advanced Admit Card
- JEE Advanced Rank Card
- Class 10 & 12 Mark Sheets
