Steps to Program an EPROM

  1. Check the EPROM Type and Voltage
    • Each EPROM model (e.g., 2716, 2732, 2764) requires a specific programming voltage—commonly 12.5V, 21V, or 25V.
    • The voltage specification is typically printed on the chip itself.
  2. Insert the EPROM into a Programmer
    • Place the chip into a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket on the EPROM programmer board.
    • Ensure correct orientation by aligning the notch on the chip with the socket marking.
  3. Set Programming Parameters
    • In a manual programmer, set address and data values using DIP switches.
    • In an automated programmer, configure chip type and load the binary or HEX file you want to burn.
    • The programmer software manages timing, voltage levels, and write sequencing.
  4. Apply Programming Pulses
    • The EPROM receives a high-voltage pulse (usually 50 ms per byte) on the program pin to trap electrons in its floating-gate transistors, storing the data bits.
    • Address lines select the target memory location, and data lines supply the byte to program.
  5. Verify the Data
    • After programming, a read-back verification step ensures that each memory location contains the correct value.
    • If verification fails, the address is reprogrammed with a new pulse.
  6. Repeat for All Data
    • The process continues sequentially for all memory addresses until the full program is written.
  7. Protect and Label
    • Once programming is complete, cover the EPROM’s quartz window with opaque tape to prevent accidental UV erasure.
