Detailed Solution

Reading a clinical thermometer correctly is a simple process.

  1. Wash and Prepare: First, wash the thermometer with antiseptic soap and water. Hold it firmly and give it a few sharp jerks to ensure the mercury level drops below 35°C (95°F).
  2. Place the Thermometer: Place the bulb of the thermometer under your tongue for about one to two minutes. Keep your mouth closed.
  3. Read the Temperature: Remove the thermometer and hold it horizontally at eye level. Rotate it slowly until you see the silver line of mercury. The reading on the scale where the mercury line ends is your body temperature. The long lines usually represent a full degree, while the short lines represent tenths of a degree (e.g., 0.1°C).
