Detailed Solution

Taking a screenshot on a laptop varies slightly by operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux). Here are the common methods:

Windows (e.g., Windows 10/11):

  • Press PrtSc (Print Screen) key – this copies the entire screen to clipboard. You then paste into Paint or other image editor and save.
  • Press Alt + PrtSc – this copies the currently active window.
  • Press Windows key + Shift + S – this opens the Snip & Sketch tool, allowing you to select a portion of screen. After selecting, the screenshot is copied to clipboard and you get a notification to edit/save.
  • Press Windows key + PrtSc – this both takes screenshot of entire screen and automatically saves it in the “Screenshots” folder inside “Pictures”.

macOS (Mac laptop):

  • Command + Shift + 3 – capture the entire screen; image saved to desktop.
  • Command + Shift + 4 – cursor changes to crosshair; drag to select part of screen; release to capture; image saved to desktop.
  • Command + Shift + 4 + Spacebar – capture a specific window; move camera icon over window and click.
  • You can press Control with the above to copy to clipboard instead of save as file.

Linux (varies by distro):

  • PrtSc – captures entire screen; often saved to “Pictures” or prompts where to save.
  • Alt + PrtSc – captures current window.
  • Shift + PrtSc – allows region selection.
Some distros include screenshot utilities like gnome-screenshot or Spectacle (KDE).

After capture you can open the saved image in an image viewer or editor for cropping, annotation or sharing.
