Detailed Solution

Adivasis and other peasants affect forests in many ways as demand for food increases. It cleared forests for production and was also used to make homes. In the 1600s, only one-sixth of India was under cultivation. More than half of the land was cultivated as the population increased. As the demand for food increased, farmers expanded the boundaries of cultivation, cleared forests and cultivated new lands. Tribals were hired to cut trees and make sleepers for railways. But the tribals were not allowed to cut trees to build their homes.
