According to the economic and social characteristics that defined each period, historians split history into those periods. They encountered two issues when doing this. Boundaries are impossible to draw because social and economic changes continue to occur. The contemporary era is contrasted with the medieval era. The concept of "modernity" suggests a sense of intellectual and material advancement. This further suggests that there had been no prior advancement, which is untrue. British historians classified Indian history into three eras in the middle of the 19th century: Hindu, Muslim, and British. Instead of the significance of historical changes and progress that each time contained, the split was made based on a religious basis. While some historians focus on economic and social aspects, others use the same periodization of India today.
